This plenary session examines Burma/Myanmar’s complex landscape through assemblage theory. Dr. Aung Naing introduces this framework, arguing it offers a richer understanding than traditional state-focused approaches. Prof. Elaine Lynn-Ee Ho then explores how care practices in border areas affect citizenship vulnerabilities, considering local and global interactions. Gustaaf Houtman raises issues surrounding assemblage theory’s limitations and proposes a conference declaration for an inclusive Burma. Ei Thinzar discusses how post-2021 coup activism has fostered new educational and community spaces, highlighting emerging social structures. The panel considers how assemblage theory can enhance our grasp of Burma/Myanmar’s realities and inform policy and social change efforts.
