Plenary Session 2 of ICBMS5 is titled “Migration from Myanmar in Southeast Asia: Multiple Realities of Migration, Policy Implications, and Practices.” This session will bring together a range of experts from the non-governmental and academic sectors to view the multifaceted reality of migration from Myanmar in its multiple forms: refugees, migrant labor, long-term Thai border camp residents and recent arrivals leaving behind the precarity and wide spread of conflict in post-coup Myanmar. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Given the entrenched nature of the political and humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, Southeast Asia\u2014and Thailand in particular\u2014continues to confront profound challenges regarding displacement and its diverse implications for host societies. Migration and refugee flows have grown increasingly complex, evolving into a paradigm of mixed migration characterized by diverse socio-economic backgrounds and intersecting legal statuses. Today, vulnerabilities of displaced populations are exacerbated by severe international humanitarian funding cuts and structural barriers to basic social welfare. Furthermore, the rise of nationalism within host societies and regional efforts toward the normalization of diplomacy with Myanmar cause more political obstacles to the protection of migrant workers and refugees. While recent progressive policies of the right to work for camp-based refugees have been introduced, substantial implementation gaps persist on the ground. This plenary session critically examines these compounding contestations, evaluating the realities of both labor migrants and refugees. Moving beyond ad-hoc humanitarian interventions, the session investigates human rights-based approaches, systemic challenges, and long-term development frameworks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
